Ralph Sadleir

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Ralph Sadleir (1507-1587) was an English knight and statesman.

At the age of seven, he was accepted into the household of the then successful Thomas Cromwell. He was given the title of Knight banneret by Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh in 1547. Sadleir rose to the position of Principal Secretary of State for Henry VIII, Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, and later became a Guardian of Mary, Queen of Scots, but died shortly after her execution in 1587.

Sadleir built Byrck Place in Homerton, Hackney in 1535 and lived there until it was sold in 1550. This is the most complete structure of Sadleir's estates remaining. It is now owned by the National Trust.

In 1559 he liased between the congregations in Scotland through Henry Balnaves and the English government over the issue of Mary Queen of Scots.

The Ralph Sadleir Middle School in Puckeridge, Hertfordshire, near where he is buried, is named after him.
