Ralph Cirella (born April 20, 1965) serves as a wardrobe consultant to radio host Howard Stern and briefly co-hosted Howard 100's The Friday Show (now on hiatus) with Gary Dell'Abate and Jon Hein on Sirius Satellite Radio. He has also appeared on Stern's television show, for which he designs the sets. In an online listener poll on Howard Stern's website, participants voted Cirella as the most despised person ever to appear on the show. He is well-known for his brutal personal observations of the flaws, major and minor, of the women who appear on the show. Despite repeatedly claiming he's isn't gay or bisexual, Ralph failed a lie detector test when asked about his sexuality. Ralph himself has a pronounced berry on his face, a fact often used to insult him.
Cirella was a caller and avid listener of Stern's show in the early to mid-1980s. He has claimed that he was a regular caller when Stern was still on WNBC in New York City. Cirella's friendship with Stern apparently began when he worked as a makeup artist/set designer on Stern's late 80s-early 90s Channel 9 television show. In the mid-90s, Cirella was hired as Stern's makeup artist for the E! broadcast of Stern's radio show, a position he lost sometime in 1997. Stern subsequently hired Cirella as his wardrobe consultant. During an interview with Cirella's then-girlfriend, actress Terry Farrell, Stern made the comment "As long as I am alive, Ralph will be taken care of." Recently, Ralph has formed a close relationship with Bubba the Love Sponge, host of the Bubba the Love Sponge Show, a show airing afternoons on Howard 101.
Members of the Stern Show sometimes call Cirella by the nickname "Ralphie Cakes", a reference to the Sopranos episode "Johnny Cakes", in which Vito befriends Jim, the diner owner. The nickname "Ralphie Cakes" was made even more popular by a song parody so catchy that Cirella has admitted he sometimes sings it (in spite of its insulting content).
On December 5, 2006, Howard Stern Show staff member Artie Lange accused Cirella of stealing money at a poker game and taking a tip meant for a waiter. As of December 6, Cirella denied taking the money but kept changing his story and incriminating himself. Another source, car dealership owner Wayne Sigel, corroborated Lange's accusation.
Bubba the Love Sponge is credited with coming up with the "Ralphie Cakes" nickname.
Ralph admitted on the January 10 2007 Wrap-Up show that Howard gave him a sizable check for Christmas, which he feels "weird" about cashing. This has caused some disgruntlement amongst fellow crew members, as a frequent topic of discussion on the show is Ralph's seemingly luxurious lifestyle, even though he hardly ever works.
Howard criticized Ralph for wanting to take time off in California, while still being paid by the show. Howard and the staff said that Ralph could easily do his job here, but Ralph stated he needs the time to "mellow out" and meet with new people. Howard TV executive producer Doug Goodstein became extremely irritated at Ralph's request.
[edit] "Ralphie Cakes Song Lyrics"
Ralphie Cakes,
you are a lazy homo!,
Ralphie Cakes,
it's like you work in slow mo,
you're a bum!,
no job gets done!,
while people go and earn their paycheck,
you're at home just watching Star Trek!,
Ralphie Cakes,
you've got disgusting berries all over your face!,
you'd rather catch than pitch,
that's why you're Howard's bitch!,
and your name is Ralphie Cakes!
