Rally Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rally Australia (currently Telstra Rally Australia) is an automobile rally competition held in Perth, Western Australia.
It was the sixteenth rally on the World Rally Championship schedule for 2005. It was held on November 11, 2005 through November 13, 2005.
The 2005 event contained 26 special stages over 355.01 km of competitive road for a total of 1345.41 km. Leg 1 travelled to the south of Perth, and included 4 stages at the super special stage complex at Gloucester Park on the Swan River. Leg 2 travelled to the south-west of Perth, where competitors met the world-famous jumps in the Bannister
Forest, before two more stages at Gloucester Park. The final leg went to the east of Perth.
Rally Australia was voted "Rally of the Year" in 1995, 1999 and 2000 by the FIA World Rally Championship teams.
The 2006 rally being held on the 26th to 29th of October appears to be the final one staged in Western Australia. It has been cancelled by the holders of the rally contract, the Western Australia Tourism Commission. CAMS, the Australian National motor sport body are hoping to find suitable locations elsewhere in the country.

[edit] Track conditions
Rally Australia is notorious for its hard “ball bearing” gravel surface and tree lined stages which demand the drivers’ full concentration. On course the world’s best drivers race against the clock along closed forest roads which are called special stages.

[edit] Trivia
Rally Australia was one of the first (if not the first) rounds of the WRC to have an official website, hosted at the University of Western Australia Library, with results posted within an hour of the end of each stage. This was in 1994 and was developed by rally enthusiasts Carl Brewer, Jason Wood and Cynan 'Dusty' Rhodes.
