A rake in a cellular automaton is a puffer, which instead of leaving behind a trail of debris, emits a stream of spaceships.

Under certain conditions, a puffer and a rake can be combined to form a breeder. The debris from the puffer is struck by gliders from the rake, forming a gun and producing a quadratic rate of growth.
