Established in 1828, Rajshahi Collegiate School (Bangla: রাজশাহী কলেিজয়েট স্কুল) is the first modern school to be established in Bangladesh.
It is located in the center of Rajshahi, a prominent city in northern Bangladesh. After the British colonial rule started in Bengal in 1757, the British started founding educational centers to create the body of (usually low ranked) officers from the native people. This let to establishment of a number of educational institutions all over India and Bengal in particular. Though a lot of institutions were established in Kolkata and the western part of Bengal, the first school in East Bengal was Rajshahi Collegiate School. Its establishment was followed by those of Jessore Zilla School, Dhaka Collegiate School, Chittagong Collegiate School and Rangpur Zilla School. The building pictured is actually the second building for the Collegiate school. The first building was in the current grassy field the boys play cricket and football (soccer)on. The building currenly in use was built several years ago and is continually being added onto. Not in the picture are several classrooms that were being added onto at last report. With the addition of these classrooms, Classes 11 and 12 will be taught at the school, in conjuntion to the Classes 3-10 currently taught there. The school is a two session school, meaning that there is a morning school student body and faculty, plus an afternoon session with its own student body and facutly. As an all-boys school, it can be rather rowdy while the school is in session, but as with all Bangladeshi schools actual schools days in a school year are probably less than 100 full days of school. However, many prominent Bangladeshis have attended this school, including the current mayor and higher political figures.Md Mofizuddin Satiar from Belderpara was educated from this school who has settled in United Kingdom since 1966 after completing his college and university studies, next to this school. He has been employed by various well known manufacturing companies in UK and holds numorous patents/innovative certificates and awards including from Duke of Westminster for recycling raw material within the textile processing/products.
