In June 2006, the Peruvian government has agreed that Ferrocarril Central Andino (FCCA) owned by RDC, the concessionaire operating Peru’s railways, should go ahead with converting the 914mm gauge Huancayo - Huancavelica line to 1,435mm. Estimated to take 16 months, the $US33m project will be funded jointly by the government and the Andean Development Corporation.

RDC has also suggested the building of a 21km, $400million tunnel in the Andes, to reduce the spectacular 332km Lima-Huancayo journey to 4 hours.
