[edit] Bangla calendar

In the article on the Bangla calendar, the sixth month's name is given as both Ashshin and Ashwin. What is the correct term? ςפקιДИτς 01:56, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Ashshin is the transliteration of the name. Phonetically, the word is pronounced Aaash-sheen. When it is written, it is written using AA-SH-WA-EE-N (in terms of Bangla script, (aa, talobbo-sha- ba-fala hrosso-e, donto-na)). So, the word Aswin is also used. Both can be considered correct. Commonly used spelling also include Asvin ([1]). Thanks. --Ragib 02:10, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
For consistancy, I'll use Ashshin. ςפקιДИτς 02:21, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
when did the Bangla Calendar come into existance ? 2001 ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Digitalsurgeon (talkcontribs).
During the rule of Akbar, the Mughal emperror, in the sixteenth century. Thanks. --Ragib 09:00, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Revolutionaries in Indian Independence movement

Hi Ragib. Please see Revolutionary movement for Indian independence.A category of the same name has also been created.Articles like Anushilan Samiti,Jugantar,Chittagong armoury raid and articles on some revolutionaries have come up.But this is a mammoth task. And so many links are in red !! Even known revolutionaries like Batukeshwar Dutt,Prafulla Chaki,Barindra Ghosh,Ullaskar Dutt are in red, not to mention scores of others. The list of cases in Revolutionary movement for Indian independence looks ugly, without any text. Please help to build up the article.Bye.--Dwaipayanc 11:57, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Sure, I'll try to work on it over the weekend. --Ragib 05:02, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your kind words and support during my gloomiest wiki-mood. My current Status is: Highly active Wikipedian as Wikipedia is a part of my life!!! [edit] Vikrampur

Hi! I found this site [2] quite informative about Dhaka Vikrampur.A personal question, do you know anything about Madaripur?Basically, this Vikrampur area also happens to be the ancestral (on maternal side) home of me, and my grand-parents also used to live in Madarihat.Thats why I am asking this. Please see the articles on the other revolutionaries recently added. You can try to expand them. All of the articles are listed under the Category:Revolutionary movement for Indian independence. Also, could you please try to expand/create new article on Dahaka Anushilan Samiti. Many location articles, even district level articles (like Jhenaidah District, Madaripur District) of Bangladesh are lacking information. These should be worked upon.Thank you.--Dwaipayanc 04:27, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bagha Jatin image problem

The image is Public domain, under Indian copyright law (taken/published 60 years ago). I tagged it as such. Thanks. --Ragib 06:37, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Reverting Pakistan

Sure, this is true for you also. Don't revert other people changes if you don't know the history. --Realitea 07:57, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your outrageous suggestion. Please read Pakistan#History. That should explain how Britain used to have Pakistan as a colony before 1947. Thanks. --Ragib 07:59, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
What "threat" did I make? 3RR is a standard warning, and I would have blocked you for disruption if I didn't happen to revert the changes. You already broke the 3RR and you are subject to block for that. If you need any more help with editing rules in wikipedia, feel free to ask me. Thanks. --Ragib 08:11, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 3 revert rule warning

  • I thaught that being an administrator you had better things to do than bully around. I must say that your actions suggest that you never deserved this. I have not talked a thing about Bangladesh, why do you want to insult my country Pakistan. As per wikipedia statndards, this category was simply inexistant on other country pages. --Falcon007 21:26, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Who's insulting what? You might notice that Bangladesh, India all have been categorized as former British colony. I devoted considerable amount of time defending the Pakistan article from vandals, on both anti-pakistani and extreme nationalist pakistani sides. You might go check the history of the page in June-July 2005, when I went to the length of creating a request for comments to remove quite extreme anti-pakistani comments. Enforcing wikipedia policies is the task of admins. If you have any comments on my administrative actions (which I'm tempted to take, but have refrained from doing so here) feel free to post a notice on the Administrator's notice board. As for your "wikipedia standards", I can show you a large number of wikipedia country pages which correctly have that category tag. See Category:Former British colonies. Thanks. --Ragib 21:35, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
    • If the above mentiontioned countries don't mind this its their business. If you are so fair in your policing, why don't you include United States also? Why are you keep insisting on having this category on Pakistan article when it is only jeoperdising wikipedia quality? --Falcon007 21:43, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Please look into the basic principles of Wikipedia. As I have mentioned several times, the Pakistan Govt's official position is not as illogical as to claim Pakistan was not a British colony before Aug 14, 1947. See the reference in the Pakistan talk page. I do not edit the United States article as I don't have much interest in doing so. Unless you can show a counter arguement, your logic defies me. Thanks. --Ragib 21:46, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pakistan

Hello. Thanks for the reference to the Bhola cyclone mention in the Pakistan article. I noticed, looking through the archives on the talk page and looking at the edit history, that you were fairly active in editing this article. Just wondering what happened. Pepsidrinka 19:43, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Last year, in June/July, someone with an IP from California/Univ. Souther California, and also using the ids SamTr014 (talk contribs), added a phrase "Pakistan is well known for terrorism" etc. to the top paragraph of the page. I removed it, noting that, it is POV, and also not the norm for country pages. So, a long discussion ensued, where the user used some anon and also some sockpuppets to gather support. I opened an RfC, and after some long discussions, a consensus in my favor was reached. I also toned down the "Bangaldesh liberation war" mention in the history section, and made it as much neutral as possible (it was either totally biased on Pakistani side or Bangladeshi side). Right now, I have the article on my watchlist, and don't edit regularly, rather I'm focusing on improving Bangladesh related articles. I have a huge number of unfinished tasks, so have to cut down on some areas. Thanks. --Ragib 19:51, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] columns

I actually tried already, in vain.--ppm 03:22, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

In fact, it seems that it can't be done. What some articles (eg, tagore) seem to do is write all references in a two column ref section,

and then have all notes refer to them. However, though this maked the notes section tidier, it doesn't make it shorter. I personally don't like that style, as the reference section becomes full of articles and books of relative unimportance.--ppm 03:35, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

I started to format the notes in tagore-esque way, namely real reference in Reference section, and notes pointing to them. follow that style if u add new ones. --ppm 19:26, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I need your support

Please help me to remove the anti-muslim propaganda on the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons controversy article. Raphael1 14:02, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Regarding your blanking of the above comment, please don't do so. This is, to start with, *my* talk page. I would decide when to remove posts. I noticed that you did the same in several other user talk pages. I don't know why you are trying to undo your spamming, but please refrain from blanking comments. Thanks. --Ragib 04:08, 23 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A note of regret

Dear Ragib, this is in reference to our unfortunate discussion a few days ago regarding a small category. I have reviewed myself and think that there were few things which were totally inappropriate on my part to say. I really regret saying them. I admire your contribution to different topics, and hope that we forget that misunderstaning and have no hard feelings, Thanks --Falcon007 13:44, 12 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Its Shehab

Hello Ragib Bhai,

Thanks for contacting me. I know you very well. You are a very famous student in Chittagong. Yes I studied both in Chittagong Collegiate School and Chittagong College. Now I am a final year student of CSE in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. I am going to give effort on my uni's page and I have some pictures taken by myself. I will put some of them on the page.

Anyway it is always nice to hear from some one famous like you. (I also have some close friends in BUET CSE who frequently talks about you) :).

Regards.

[edit] Regarding Chittagong Govt High contents

Dear Ragib,

Cghs.tk is the website i developed and thus the content from cghs.tk is solely written by me. CGHS history was taken from oldcghs.com but i have already notified the webmaster of oldcghs.com and they have also put a link to cghs.tk from their website.

Dear Ragib Bhai,

I have put the content back in the CGHS page which was taken from CGHS.tk and i developed cghs.tk and thus i wrote the section 'CGHS in few words'. Please let me know what do i need to do before someone deletes CGHS page again. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Drghalib (talkcontribs).

I replied in your talk page. The reason the page was deleted before was the copyvio (the content was listed in several websites besides the cghs.tk site. And the content you just added back is not really fit for an encyclopedia. An article on a school needs to list the history, the notable alumni and so on. It shouldn't sound like propaganda. Thanks. --Ragib 04:06, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:

Hi - thanks for correcting my mistake. Rama's Arrow 04:01, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] My apologies

Hi Ragib,

I've read the guidelines, and I now realise I shouldn't have put up my article, whether it was a website stub or not. I am very sorry. I'm not sure why I received a final warning though, considering the guidelines advise a more friendly template for newbies.

I am going to write a new article (on a different topic). Would it be okay to send it to you before submitting it? I don't want to submit it, fall foul of your judgement, and be banned as a result. I am a newbie and newbies make mistakes. Would you do me the honour of checking my next article? Obviously in our diverse world, people have different subjectivity and perceptions of what is acceptable behaviour. Since you are an academic, I trust that you would agree that new entrants to a culture such as Wikipedia shouldn't suffer from draconian actions without being given access to a fair hearing.

Once again, I apologise for the results of my naivety.

Kind regards, GeeWhizz 10:44, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sylhet articles

Hello Ragib,

I am just writing to let you know I intend to sort out and expand the Sylhet articles very soon. However, you might not see much activity in the next two weeks, as I'm busy with all sorts of stuff going on..so Sylhet's gonna have to wait a fortnight..but after that, I will contribute to it. Yours, Tanzeel 15:35, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] P.C. Sorcar Spelling

The issue is not Wikipedia style, it is how a particular name is spelled. Search Google for "P.C. Sorcar" and you will see that the convention is to not spell it with a space. In fact, this is quite common for Indian names with two letter initials as the "first name". Thanks. Abpatak 06:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

The issue IS a wikipedia style. You are free to use the modified style inside the article, but the article name needs to use wikipedia's convention. Thanks. --Ragib 06:44, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Can you please point out the the portion of the style guide which indicates that initials must have a space between them? I don't seem to see that. Abpatak 06:47, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

It is seen in the example "E. B. White". For an even clearer reference, I'm quoting from Wikipedia:Naming_conventions (people)#Middle_names_-_abbreviations_of_names
For abbreviated names (if these are the most used) every abbreviation is followed by a point, and every point is followed by a single space.
Thanks. --Ragib 06:57, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
The Wikipedia convention here appears to be wrong. See: http://nobelprize.org/literature/laureates/2001/naipaul-bio.html for an example of how many Indian names are not spelled with the space. What is the procedure to suggest amending the policy? Abpatak 07:08, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

If you feel the manual of style needs to be amended, please propose the change at Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (people). After the proposal reaches a consensus, the biography articles can be changed. But until then, it is best to stick to the Naming convention. Thanks. --Ragib 07:12, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Could you please...

Hi! Could you please see this, this and this and comment? BTW, Bangladesh should be put up for FAC , It's a great article. Wish we could have added photos of a paddy field and also of the Jamuna bridge.Thanks.:). --Dwaipayanc 09:25, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re:Rangpur cat

Hi - I'll do it. Thanks, Rama's Arrow 03:11, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Regarding Bangladesh's imminent FAC, I advise that you observe Pakistan's FAC for a while. Any comments there will be helpful. Also, I can't put a finger on anything in particular, but I think there's still some more work to do on Bangladesh. But great work so far. Rama's Arrow 03:39, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot. I'll definitely do that. --Ragib 03:46, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bangladesh history

Hi! I added a piece of info in the "History" section of Bangladesh, regarding the government-in-exile of Awami league in Kolkata. The info was added just after the statement on the estimate of massacred people. However, the reference to the info (from Britannica) , I feel, was not given in the correct way due to my technical inability! Please see so that the reference is cited in the correct way. Thanks.--Dwaipayanc 11:03, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

You did fine ... the citation style is correct. Actually, we'd ultimately convert all the citations into more manageable {Harv|} templates, but until then, using ref with inline citation is ok. Thanks for adding the factoid. --Ragib 11:14, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Template:BangladeshTopics

Hi - I've created this template, akin to the PakistanTopics one. Please help me customize and improve it as per "Bangladeshi" style, topics. Rama's Arrow 17:04, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bangladeshi Music

oops, my bad. I'll revert the changes, so musicians have category: Musicians of Bangladesh. Thanks for letting me knowAbid Ahmed 06:06, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Do you think Category:Music of Bangladesh & Category:Bangladeshi music should be combined? What's the difference? It's not like it is something that'd be disputed like: Bengali music vs Bangladeshi music. --Abid Ahmed 06:19, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Definitely, usually there is no real reason to have both of them. I think "Bangladeshi music" would be the correct category, in keeping with similar cateogories like Category:Indian music, Category:Pakistani music. Feel free to move articles to the proper category. I'd put the other one into Categories for deletion. Thanks. --Ragib 06:24, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Hey, what editing software do you use? I was going to make some tables etc. How do i do that? I tried looking it up, but kinda got lost amid technical jurgons. Thanks... --Abid Ahmed 07:52, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

You an check out my user page, where I have a table in the contributions section (User:Ragib). Basically, that's the easiest way of creating a table in wikipedia. Thanks. --Ragib 08:26, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
