[Radio Music Shop] the world’s first retail radio station. It is a commercial venture, however rather than being funded by adverts, it is funded by album sales. It is based in London and broadcasts nationally 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from the ITN building. It is based on the concept that listeners can buy any of the great music they hear direct from RMS.

[edit] History

[Radio Music Shop] is the brainchild of Sonita Alleyne OBE and Jez Nelson, and was created by Somethin’ Else Sound Directions. It launched initially on Sky 0208 and Freeview 729, as well as on the website. It began broadcasting live at 8am, 18th December 2006 with the first track being The Verve’s ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony’. Because of the sales nature of the station, a launch team were bought in to reflect the initial success of shopping channels in the Sit-Up network, headed by Director of Programming Marcus Railton, who also went on to present the afternoon show.

[edit] How it Works.

Customers can listen to the station on Freeview channel 729, sky channel 0208, or listen on the website [www.radiomusicshop.com]. If they hear something they like, they can call and purchase the CD, which will then be sent straight to them. Or they can order any of the albums from the website.

[edit] Programming

RMS plays adult contemporary music to suit the listening habits of it’s demographic of 35-55 year olds. The schedule differs from its traditional counterparts by having different moods across the day to reflect listening habits. As well as DJ-ing, its presenters also share anecdotes, trivia and background about the tracks they are playing. It also runs no adverts for any other products than the CDs themselves. The playlist consists of tracks from a large range of genres from over the last 30 years. It aims to reflect the large collection of seminal albums available to buy from them, as well as the wide range of back catalogues.

[edit] Presenters

Currently, the presenters are – Shak, Sean MacIntosh, Marcus Railton, Mark Ryes, Eddie Matthews, Dave Armstrong, Lucy Irving, Emma Mackie, Charlie McArdle, Nana Akua and Nick Minter.

[edit] Code of Practise

As Radio Music Shop is an advert for it’s own services, it is governed by the Advertising Standards Authority and OFCOM, and abides by the ICSTIS code of practice due to its premium rate telephone number. As it does not carry any other commercials, it is not monitored by RAJAR.
