Television New Zealand broadcast Radio with Pictures from 1977 to 1986 as a programme on popular and alternative music, presented initially by Barry Jenkins (Dr. Rock), followed by Phil O'Brien, and then by Karen Hay and finally by Dick Driver.

The content was mostly alternative music, and music videos that couldn't be aired during prime time for censorship reasons.

Before stereo television broadcasts were commonly available, a simulcast was available on the student radio stations which are now known as b.net.
