[edit] Season 1

Zelenka has come through many times for the expedition. When Sheppard's team Puddle Jumper was stuck in an active Stargate, he went to work in another Puddle Jumper to try to isolate the control pathways of the engine pod so McKay could retract the frozen, extended engine pod.[1]

Later, he worked with McKay to try to figure out a way to protect the city from the massive hurricane heading its way, but left before the city was taken by an elite Genii strike team.[2]

While looking from structural damage in the city due to the storm, he and McKay played Prime/Not Prime. It was also revealed that he had been given Dr. Beckett's ATA Gene Therapy, but it did not take.[3]

He inadvertently discovered Atlantis' deep-space sensors, which enabled the Expedition to detect the three Wraith Hive-Ships that were making their way to the city. [4]

When they thought they would have to evacuate the city, he devised a computer virus that would destroy the highly redundant Ancient database, should Atlantis become lost to the human expedition. He also aided McKay in completing the Genii nuclear bombs, which would be used to destroy the two Wraith hive ships when delivered by a cloaked Puddle Jumper.[5]

[edit] Season 2

After the Daedalus arrived with the Zero Point Module, Radek took control of shield operations in the Control Room while Rodney went to install the ZPM to power it. Afterwards, he helped Rodney interface the Puddle Jumpers' cloak systems with the shield so they could cloak the city and make the Wraith believe Atlantis self-destructed. When a Wraith enzyme-addicted Lt. Ford broke from the infirmary, he knocked Zelenka down in order to steal a Puddle Jumper.[6]

After the Wraith dart that had captured Dr. McKay and Lt. Cadman was shot down at Col. Sheppard's order, Dr. Zelenka travelled off-world for the first time (not counting his evacuation to Manaria during the storm on Atlantis) since his arrival to Atlantis to try to save them. He found out they were trapped inside the Wraith dart's teleportation device, but there was only enough energy to rematerialize one of them at the time. Sheppard told him to extract McKay, but Zelenka informed him that he could not tell which life sign was which. Sheppard just chose one, who turned out to be McKay, but a malfunction caused Lt. Cadman's mind to be trapped in McKay's body alongside his own. The team took the damaged Wraith Dart back to Atlantis to attempt to save Cadman, but the pressure of two minds in one brain has been too much for Rodney and Zelenka was forced to confront McKay and tell him so in no uncertain terms and to, please, go away and let him work. Finally, with the help of a sudden idea by McKay, they managed to restore Cadman to her proper body.[7]

He worked alongside McKay while trying to make the experimental Ancient power generator, Project Arcturus, work. While attempting to bring the power generator and weapon back online, a scientist was killed when the reaction breached containment. Zelenka returned to Atlantis, and figured out why the Ancients had abandoned this technology, but McKay refused to listen to him. But after the power generator exploded, McKay apologized to him off-screen.[8]

While McKay was on a mission he discovered a second Wraith Hive ship heading towards Atlantis, possibly after the Wraith learned through Michael that Atlantis still exists.[9]

[edit] Season 3

Radek was on board the Orion with Major Lorne when they engaged a hive ship in combat. He managed to divert shield power to weapons, allowing the ship to fire; but the Orion was greatly damaged as a result and Radek told Lorne that they needed to evacuate immediately. The Daedalus beamed them out.[10]

Several weeks later, Zelenka detected a Wraith hive ship moving towards the Odyssey as her crew attempted to dial the Ori Supergate from the Pegasus Galaxy. Zelenka was unable to warn Odyssey due to interference from a black hole, but Dr. Weir successfully relayed the message through Stargate Command.[11]

Radek was later seen preparing to evacuate in The Return. Dr. Beckett started to tell both him and McKay something that was probably that out of everyone in the base he'd miss them the most but never got to finish it since McKay's sarcastic comments interrupted Beckett.

In Tao of Rodney Radek is badly wounded and healed by McKay using the healing power of the Ancients just as he is about to die. McKay also admits that he is a brilliant scientist and apologizes for all of the times he puts him down. Radek also works diligently to find a way to save McKay throughout the episode.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Translations

His frequent bursts of Czech are extremely popular among Stargate fans who speak the language.

- Můžeš mi dát ty nejnovější data, prosim? Já se s tímhle nemůžu hnout.: Please, could you give me the latest data? I can’t seem to solve this.
- Ne, tak aspoň, aspoň tři mi dej.: No. Give me at least, at least three.
- To je ono, my to máme.: That is it, we have it.

- Ježiši, já s těma hercema nemůžu dělat: Jesus, I can't work with these actors.

- Na dně moře máme „fail safe“ , mechanizmus. Obrovskou silou vytrhl kotvu města ze dna oceánu. My jsme.. Zhrozili jsme jsme.. Zhrozili jsme se. Neuveřitelný, co se to děje a ten hluk; celé město se třáslo jako při zemětřesení. To bylo něco neuvěritelnýho. A najednou... se hneme. Celé město stoupalo. Stoupalo nahoru, nahoru k hladině. To, to bylo něco neuveřitelnýho a a a a a věže prorazily hladinu a vyjeli jsme nahoru nahoru a vody, vlny, vodopády, všechno teče z těch vejšek. A my... vystřelili jsme nahoru, úplně, úplně na vršek.. Slunce.... Sluníčko, prostě.... proudilo do všech oken. Do smrti, do smrti na to nezapomenu.:
On the bottom of the sea we have a failsafe mechanism. It pulled up the anchor of the city from the bottom of the sea with great force. We.... we were.... we were scared. That was incredible, what happened? And that noise. The whole city was shaking, it was like an earthquake. That was so incredible. And then we were moving. The whole city was rising. It was rising up, rising up to the ocean surface. It was, it was really incredible and the towers broke through the surface. We were going up. Water, waves, waterfalls were falling down from the heights. And we... we were shot up, right to the top. Sun... just shine... It was shining through all the windows. I'll remember it for the rest of my life... for the rest of my life.
- Drž se, miláčku.: Take care, honey.

-No jo... Tak jo děcka, do toho, jdeme, jdeme, jdeme, musíme tohle dodělat, pojdte už, honem!: Yeah... Okay kids, come on, go go go, we have to finish it, come on, move on!

-Ty vole "Say hi to the kids for me", já ti dám, ty seš takovej vůl.: Damn it, 'Say hi to the kids for me' , you're gonna get it from me, you're such an idiot.

-Do prdele, to je na hovno tohle to, kdo to vymyslel že budeme pod vodou tentokrát?: "For cryin' out loud" (paraphrased, see next quotation), this sucks. We're gonna be under water this time - whose idea was that?

-I am trying, do prdele!: "Do prdele!" is a semi-offensive term comparable to "for cryin' out loud" in English.

- To je frajer teda, to je...: That's a cool guy, heh, that is...
- On letí, on tak krásně letí...: He's flying, he's flying so beautifully...

Měj se.: Take care. (said to Radek by Rod)

[edit] Trivia

  • Originally, David Nykl auditioned for a Russian character. Days later, he found out that not only had he got the part, they had made the character Czech like himself. Zelenka was intended to appear only in "Thirty-eight Minutes", but he made such an impression that he became a semi-regular character.[12]
  • The name "Radek" was first mention in the episode "The Siege, Part I". McKay calls him by his first name before leaving for the Ancients' weapon satellite array.
  • Early in the series, McKay frequently forgot Zelenka's name, often referring to him as "The Czech."
  • While Zelenka usually only says the occasional short phrase in Czech, he effusively described Atlantis rising from the ocean entirely in his native language in "Letters from Pegasus". Team members were permitted to make recorded messages to send to their families, so long as they did not mention any classified material, i.e. that they were on another planet in another galaxy and the government had access to the technology to travel there. Lt. Aiden Ford, the person making the recording, spoke no Czech, but pointedly asked him if he had said anything that would require security clearance, to which he responded "Security clearance?"
  • It has been mentioned that his frequent bursts of Czech are extremely popular among Stargate fans who speak the language. David Nykl has declared they are 50 percent translations of the script and 50 percent his own invention.[13]
