[edit] History

The history of football in Ferrol is associated to the shipbuilding yards, workshops, foundries and dry docks and the British technical advisors, hired to work locally who used to play against existing teams. During the late 1800s and early 1900s there were different football teams organized in Ferrol, though only one of them has survived, and as a result of an amalgamation of some other previous teams. Racing Ferrol Football Club traces its origins back to June 1919, when the final team as it stands today was finally established. These days plays in the Spanish Segunda División.

In the season 2005/06 they finished in 20th position and therefore was relegated to Segunda División B.

[edit] Stadiums

Estadio de la Malata holds 12,042 and was built in 1993. The pitch dimensions are 105 x 68 metres

Racing have used three principle stadiums over the years, starting with Campo de Futbol Infernino which they continued to use until moving to Estadio Manuel Rivera in 1954. This was an oval shaped enclosure with a single cantilever stand. In the 1970's, a cover was erected over the popular terrace.

In 1993 the metropolitan area of Ferrol built Estadio de la Malata to the west of the town, near the valley of Serantes. The total cost of the development was 1700 million pesetas.

The first match to be played at Estadio de la Malata was on 18 April 1993 when Racing de Ferrol beat Atletico B 3-2. The official inauguration took place on 29 August 1993 with a triangular tournament featuring the home side, Celta Vigo and Deportivo La Coruna
