The R747 is a regional road running north-west/south-east from the N9 at Ballitore in County Kildare to Arklow in County Wicklow, a distance of 64km.

From its junction with the N9 it enters County Wicklow almost immediately and 10km southeast it crosses the N81 in the town of Baltinglass. It continues southeast through Kiltegan before crossing into County Carlow for a short distance where it passes through Hacketstown. Back in County Wicklow it crosses the Wicklow Way and enters the southern end of the Wicklow Mountains near Tinahely.

From Tinahely it heads northwest for 14km to Aughrim, and then east along the valley of Aughrim River to Woodenbridge where it is joined by the R752. The final leg of its eastward route is through the valley of the River Avoca which takes it through Avoca and under (though not connecting to) the N11 before terminating in the centre of Arklow.

Like the other main regional roads in the Wicklow Mountains, the R115, R759, R756, R752 and R755 this road passes through some wonderful scenery.

As part of the construction of the new N9 dual-carriageway from Kilcullen to Waterford a link-road from Athy to the new N9 is to be built, extending eastwards to the current N9/R747 junction. This may be classified as an extension of the R747. Ref: [1]
