Quylthulg
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A quylthulg is a fictional monster found in the roguelike computer games Moria, Angband and ZAngband, which takes the form of an invisible pulsating mound of flesh.
Quylthulgs are unable to move appreciably: if threatened, they may try to escape by teleporting a short distance away. Though incapable of performing physical attacks themselves, they nonetheless present a significant threat to adventurers, as they are able to magically summon other creatures from great distances to attack. Despite their risks, a mid- to high-level Angband character can find amusement in farming quylthulgs for the drops of their summoned monsters.
The quylthulg's physiology seems strongly influenced by that of the outlandish extraterrestrial creatures found in the works of H.P. Lovecraft, though no explicit mention of Lovecraft's works is made in Angband. Similar monsters in Angband include Jellies, molds, and "Icky Things".
Quylthulg names are notoriously difficult to spell. The ruler of the quylthulgs is Qlzqqlzuup, the Emperor Quylthulg (or, in earlier versions, "Qlzqqlzuup, the Lord of Flesh").
Geoff Hill, the person who added Qlzqqlzuup to Angband, has said that "Qlzqqlzuup is the result of too much alcohol combined with late night coding. The spelling was both drunken and somewhat unintentional".
