Quo Vadis is a melodic technical death metal band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They named themselves after the eponymous novel by Polish writer Henryk Sienkiewicz.

The band's influences were numerous and varied, but most markedly death metal and classical music. On their first studio album "Forever", there is much power and brutality, but with a strong lyrical tinge, including violin passages, spoken word, as well as a full ballad with an opera singer, Sebrina Lipari. There is much anger that transpires through the lyrics, both in a direct form in songs like "Pantheon of Tears", as well as a more subdued and metaphorical way in tracks "As I Feed The Flames of Hate" and "Carpae Deum".

On the second album, "Day Into Night", the focus shifted to a more defined death metal sound, in keeping with their contemporaries. This second album would ultimately bring appreciation throughout North America and with fans South of the Canadian border. The sound production was superior in quality, however some critics saw an unnecessary emphasis on the drums. Nevertheless, the guitar-work shines through on this album, with anthemic riffs and intense solos, as well as the two guitarists' vocals and engaging lyrics.

Their latest offering, the 2005 triple DVD entitled Defiant Indoctrination is a concert performed and recorded in their home town on May 7, 2005. It features spectacular visuals and theatricals. At the show, they performed every song from their latest album, Defiant Imagination, as well as various tracks from their other albums. In addition, the third disc is the entire drum footage of the show, focusing entirely on drummer Yanic Bercier. Special attention has been given to sound, the mix being handled by Jean-Francois Dagenais (Kataklysm, Misery Index). A star-studded lineup of guest musicians is presented, such as famous Quebec cellist Claude Lamothe, Alex Auburn of Cryptopsy fame, bassist Dominique "Forest" Lapointe of Augury/Atheretic/Negativa, and a classical choir and violinist to top it off.

[edit] Trivia

  • Drummer Yanic Bercier has trained himself to play so loud, in certain concert venues he is louder than the PA system.
  • Guitarist Bart Frydrychowicz's live setup is based around the "four-cable method".
  • The drum triggers used during live shows were despised by many fans as a help to soft drumming, when in reality Bercier uses them to fine-tune the tone and pitch of the drumkit.
