Quiescent prominence

A quiescent prominence is a long, sheet-like prominence of relatively cool solar material that hangs nearly vertically to the Sun's surface for days or months.
It consists of a cloud of gas kept in position by the Sun's magnetic field and in the end may eject hot gas into the Solar System as a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME).
However, the mechanism behind the prominence is as yet little understood.
