Queen Elizabeth Secondary is a public high school in Surrey, British Columbia part of School District 36 Surrey. The school is named after Queen Elizabeth who visited Canada in 1939, with her husband King George VI.
[edit] Historical Background
Queen Elizabeth Secondary School opened its doors for the first time in the Fall of 1940 during the dark days of the Second World War. The previous year His Majesty King George VI and his consort Queen Elizabeth visited Canada as the war clouds were gathering over Europe. It was the first visit to Canada of a reigning British monarch. The royal tour was immensely popular and Queen Elizabeth, in particular, made a deep impression on the people of Canada. The new secondary school in Surrey, British Columbia was named after her.
Queen Elizabeth was a full secondary school through the forties and fifties then a senior high school from the sixties to the nineties. In September 1999 QE amalgamated with William Beagle Junior Secondary to become a grade eight to twelve school once again.
