Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Penrith

Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS), which was founded in 1564, is a selective secondary school in Penrith, Cumbria. It moved from its original premises in St Andrew's churchyard to its present site on Ullswater Road, close to the railway station, in 1917.
The present headmaster is Mr C J Kirkup, succeeded Mr Colin Birnie in 2004.
The school has a strong academic tradition, and the most popular sports are Rugby Union, Football, Athletics, Cross Country, Cricket, Netball and Hockey.
The school has always produced strong rugby-playing sides, and some of the past 1st XVs have beaten some of the finest rugby-playing schools in the north of England including Sedbergh School.
It currently has approx. 800 pupils and has a strong rivalry with the neighbouring school Ullswater Community College.
