Queen Elanor's Confession

Queen Elanor's Confession or Queen Eleanor's Confession is Child ballad 156. Although the figures are intended as Eleanor of Aquitaine, Henry II of England, and William Marshall, the story is an entire invention.

Queen Eleanor is mortally sick and sends for a French friar to confess. The king has the earl marshal come with him to her, both of them dressed as friars. The queen confesses to losing her virginity to the earl marshall, carrying poison to kill the king, and poisoning Rosamund Clifford, the king's mistress. Finally, she says she loves the Earl Marshall's son and hates the king's. The king reveals himself and declares if it were not for his oath, he would kill the Earl Marshall.
