Autoroute 540 (Vaudreuil-Dorion) is a short spur road, connecting Autoroute 20 to Autoroute 40, providing a direct freeway link from Windsor, Ontario to Quebec City, Quebec, Rimouski and points east, via A-40, as A-20 currently has several at-grade intersections in Vaudreuil-Dorion, Quebec as a multi-lane divided road. It is currently the shortest numbered Autoroute.
The road also acts as a part of a ring road around the western edge of Metropolitan Montreal, Quebec. It is speculated that A-540 may be re-designated as an extension of Autoroute 30, while the old alignment of A-30 is renamed Autoroute 530, becoming more or less, a full southern ring road of Montreal with A-30.
There is also an A-540 in the Quebec City region which links Quebec Autoroute 40 & Quebec Autoroute 73.
