[edit] < and > xml codes

Okay, but the trouble is that (a) the pages can't be linked to by doing [[>]] and [[<]], and (b) they can't be found through the Go/Search function either. So there's really no point in having separate pages for them, if it doesn't help people find the information quicker. sjorford (talk) 15:36, 9 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] The dark prison

  1. You didn't sign your nomination for {afd}.
  2. Are you sure you are supposed to both make the nomination and vote? Wouldn't that amount to voting twice?
  3. If you check the guidelines for WP:AFD I think you will find that what you are supposed to do if you think you detect a biased point of view in an article is to bring your concern up on the talk page. What I think you will find you are not supposed to do is nominate that article for deletion.
Have a nice day. -- Geo Swan 13:38, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
I dispute your assertion that the article shows a biased point of view. I invite you to be specific, on Talk:The dark prison, about what makes you think the article is biased. -- Geo Swan 13:42, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] NYC Portal box

Hello Quasipalm. Your work on NYC related stuff is fantastic. I have a small request I hope you might consider. Several NYC sub-articles have been started and fleshed out since this box was created:

I propose updating the box by replacing "large corporations" with "Economy" (linking to the new Economy of New York City article) and replacing "famous New Yorkers" with Demographics of New York City. This box could become a sort of index of substantive sub articles. I'd attempt making it myself, but alas I do not know how. Here are a list of substantial NYC sub-articles.

1. History of New York City 2. Geography and environment of New York City 3. Government of New York City 4. Economy of New York City 5. Demographics of New York City 6. Culture of New York City 7. Transportation in New York City 7a. Mass transit in New York City 7b. New York City Subway 8. Media of New York City 9. Broadway Theatre

What do you think? Wv235 02:27, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] US Collaboration of the week

You have voted for Transportation in New York City on WP:USCOTW. It was selected to be this week's winner. You are invited to contribute to improve Transportation in New York City in any way you can. Cmadler 13:27, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the Charts

Quasipalm, the charts you made for the Demographics of New York City article are outstanding. If you're of a mind for it, giving the treatment to ethnic and religious city data would really top it off. At any rate, your work has transformed the article from a mess to something well on the way to feature status. It'd be great to get all the main NYC sub-articles up to a standard of quality. You've inspired me to learn more about wiki charts and graphics. I tried to enhance the NY State template box. Wv235 05:13, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

Hi Quasipalm - Do you know if it's possible to see the number of page views an article gets? I noticed the stats on the NYC portal page about the number of times New York City was visted and searched for. I'm interested in learning those same numbers for a few other NYC related pages. Thanks. Wv235 23:19, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the info on page views. I think the New York City article is close to feature status. I've put it up for peer review. Your input would be great. Wv235 16:49, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] hello

Who are you, and why did you call me Alfonso??? TripleH1976 11:23 am, February 3, 2006 (UTC)

What is your problem with me? Gay people are corrupting our children, they want to teach 5 year olds about their sick lifestyle. That's totally wrong and sick. TripleH1976 February 5, 2005 03:26 pm (UTC)

You're one sad individual. Take a look at Jacob D. Robida's page on MySpace and tell me who's sick. Regardless, Wikipedia is not a place where condoning physical violence against gay people and policemen, or anyone for that matter is acceptable, so stop it.
And hey, nothing's gayer than prowrestling (especially Triple H) so if you're really a homophobe get a new name already. Now stay off my talk page. --Quasipalm 23:51, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

I stand by my post. Here is the full conversation, people may review it as they will, but I've removed you taking it out of context above.
Quoted from Talk:Abortion:
And then, as the effects of abortion became widespread/commonplace (1977+18), the drug rate spiked. Thesis I do not support claims that abortion solved a crime wave. I have not made any claims about the myriad negative effects of abortion. I am simply refuting your fallacious claims. And since you brought up blame for bad things, I would suspect that I could blame this weekend's blizzard and all other bad news on President Bush on this page and garner lots of support from the "consensus". 84.146.216.195 00:28, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RSS Advisory Board

Regarding your comment, "if Cadenhead is notable for being on this board, shouldn't the board be notable enough for it's own article? If someone wants to put that article together, that'd be great," no one has taken up your suggestion. I will create an article on the board if you'll agree to follow up and ensure that it's NPOV. Alternatively, I'll e-mail you the text of a prospective article and you can decide whether to post it on Wikipedia. My e-mail's rcade at yahoo dot com. Rcade 14:24, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about that. I was reverting the vandalism of the person who posted before you, and I missed your addition. Didn't intend to blank your part of the article.--Vercalos 22:26, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] User talk:Jackthompson

I won't revert you again, but I really think that putting the {{NPA}} template on that page can only inflame the situation. I think the sentiment is expressed in the comments by WAvegetarian and myself in a less confrontational manner. I'm not sure if there's any chance of persuading him to be civil, but I think if there is then it is by being as restrained as possible.--Cherry blossom tree 22:56, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

I'll buy your logic and keep from adding NPA to his user page for now -- but if he lashes out again, I'll re-add for each incident. While a flame war isn't good for anyone, we shouldn't treat this guy different than any one else that makes personal attacks on Wikipedia, IMHO.
Btw, hi, nice to meet you.  :-)

[edit] Warnings on user pages

Hi. When placing a warning template on a user page, it's good to still put ~~~~ after it. This gives a little bit more information to the next person who comes along. For example, for rolling IPs we tend to re-set the "counter" every twenty-four hours, so if there are a few old warnings we know to start again with test 1. [edit] NYC climate chart....

Hi Quasipalm. Was just reviewing the NYC article, looking for places to edit it down more concisely. I feel climate change coming on... It occurred to me the Climate section is ripe for change for two reasons: a)climate information is not well-suited to text b)a nice graphic would convey info about temp & precip far more readily and at the same time save space. Then I thought, I know just who to ask... if you get around to it, I think a major contribution would be something like those fantastic graphics you made for the demographics article.

Also, I saw your comment about mentioning the imbalance of payments NYC makes to Albany to an upstater and him not believing it. Someone linked to a Gotham Gazette article that cites that stat. I looked into it a little more and found a report by the non-partisan NYC Finance Division to the City Council that confirms and elaborates this point. You can point disbelievers to this address: http://webdocs.nyccouncil.info/attachments/65379.htm?CFID=232457&CFTOKEN=33008944 Take care - Wv235 22:55, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sending template messages to other users

Hi, Quasipalm. When sending npa template messages to other users, could you consider subst'ing them by using {{subst:npa}} instead of {{npa}}. That reduces the load on the server. It also ensures that if the actual template is vandalized, the message on the user's talk page won't be affected. The same goes for many of the template messages, for example, {{subst:test1}} etc. If in doubt as to whether a particular template is suitable for subst'ing, you could try viewing it in "preview" before pressing "save". Thanks. AnnH 13:48, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Taipei

I was merely bringing it into accord with what the World's tallest buildings page said, as well as the Taipei 101's infobox, which claims that the Petronas towers preceeded it in that category. If you are going to use different criteria for different buildings wouldn't it make sense to specify which category of the four categories each tower holds, and then define them, rather than the one that makes the denizens of each city feel special? Otherwise it makes wikipedia too confusing to ever be made into an encyclopedia. Obviously it confused me. Donbas 17:39, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] June Meetup in New York

Take a peek at this and please tell any other Wikipedians that you think might be interested in participating about this event. Thanks. Alex756 02:25, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks, but no thanks.

If you think my addition to the talk section on "Abortion and Religion" wasn't focused on improving the article, then you didn't read it. Start at the end if you have to. I was making a point by framing it personally, and this was, after all, a TALK page.

Talk pages are not free-for-alls. They fall under wikipedia rules just like article pages. They are there to improve the article -- not for POV pushing, original research, or letters to other wikipedians.

Read the whole thing before you delete it again.

Nothing except etiquette, by the way, stops me from taking a hatchet to the whole article and rewriting from my own perspective, as others apparently do routinely. But I asked politely first.

No, I'd prevent you from taking a hatchet to the whole article and adding in POV, as would others who watch the page.

I saw your edits, too, Quasipalm.

Are you suggesting I added POV to the article? It's all clearly sourced -- please feel free to add what POV I added and let me know -- we can discuss it on the talk page.

In case it hadn't occurred to you, this issue is way bigger than just Mark, or you, or me. Most of the letters in the New Testament were written in the same style I wrote that section - personally. Would you have deleted them as well? Would all of the NT epistles not survive your opinion of what contributes positively to a discussion? Make sure you have an answer for yourself, before you delete it again.

Yes, I would. If Jesus himself wrote POV, meandering, original research letters in Wikipedia, I would remove them.

Peace and love to you as well.

Thanks. Good luck to you. -Quasipalm 18:40, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I just wanted to thank you for taking down that incredibly disgusting...NASTY picture on the article. >,> THANK YOU!--WatchHawk 17:24, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

I strongly disagree that the image doesn't belong there. If you two are grossed out by it that is your issue. It does not mean you have carte blanche to determine what people should and shouldn't view. TripleH1976 Mon 21:43 p.m., 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Why did you do that?

You added a link to my userpage from a subpage I'm keeping hidden now. (How did you find it anyway? Oh, you saw the link when you archived old topics on Talk:Hell. Never mind that.) I did what I needed to do to keep myself from going to that particular afterlife. You can add the people that were more known for the bad things in life and/or who they didn't accept as their own personal Savior, but don't add me, it could be construed as a personal attack. --Shultz IV 20:37, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Antichrist

Why didn't you fix the page rather than browsing by and just making rude comments on the discussion page? That is what was pointless. We are writing an encyclopedia, not trying to impress other editors with our glib denunciations of a page that has obvious problems. It would have taken you 30 seconds to fix the page. So I fixed it. And you suggest that I am "much to busy to be bothered with such trivial matters." Do some work here, don't just pontificate.--Cberlet 13:37, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] NYC Borough template

Hi Quasipalm - I've admired your sophisticated abilities with graphics in various NYC related articles. They add so much! I've tried to teach myself how to make infoboxes and have made an infobox template for the five NYC boroughs. It's based on Template:Infobox London and Template:Infobox London place. The proposed name would be "Template:Infobox New York City borough." But there's a problem I'm hoping you might be able to solve. I don't know how to represent a borough on a city-wide map. An inset arrangement showing a zoomed out and zoomed in view in the map area of the infobox for Dutch municipalities would work great: The zoomed out view would encompass NYC, Long Island, and a bit of NJ and CT.

Coordinates: 52.18° N 5.00° E

Breukelen

Location municipality Breukelen

Country Netherlands
Province Utrecht
Coordinates 52.18° N 5.00° E
Area 48.64 km²
- Land 45.93 km²
- Water 2.71 km²
Population 14,464 (2005)
- Density 315/km²
Mayor F.C. Dales (D66)
Website www.breukelen.nl

Here is my NYC Borough infobox template so far:

{{{Borough}}}
The Palace of Westminster on the River Thames
The Palace of Westminster on the River Thames

Hispanic:
Asian:

The challenge is to replace the England map with an NYC area map similar to the Dutch municipalities map (an NYC map with the same horizontal format would be very cool). Any ideas on how to do this? All help is much appreciated. I'm in totally over my head. Wv235 22:12, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

  • Quasi - Thanks so much for the map. Just what I had in mind. Can the outlines of the boroughs be made darker so they are discernable when the map is shrunk on a computer monitor? Alas, I wish I had your skills so as to do it myself and spare you the hassle. Again, thanks so much for your efforts. Wv235 03:03, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Quasi - The map graphic is great. What software do I need to do more work on it? How do you go about making your edits? Wv235 23:01, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Gwyneth Paltrow

I restored the Jewish category because there are a multitude of sources that refer to Paltrow as Jewish - including Paltrow herself - [13][14][15] [16][17] (and that's what we go by with categories, if there is a reliable source that refers to someone as Jewish, then they are for Wikipedia purposes). Who is a Jew? is a very lengthy article with a large number of defintions; you picked one, which is original research (and besides, Paltrow certainly fits into the definition given for a Reform Jew - being raised Jewish and expressing public self-identification; not to mention that she is Jewish by ethnicity; but again, that's my original research). I really don't want to go into a lengthy and unproductive edit war. Remember, it all depends on what the sources say specifically on the person involved; we can't match definitions we like to information and produce a hypothesis.
