Quantitative notrump bids is a bridge treatment whereby, following an opening bid of 1NT or 2NT, a response of 4NT is a slam try asking opener to bid 6NT with a maximum point count or to pass with the minimum; some partnerships use the intermediate reply of 5NT for a middle pointcount; thus in the Acol system (12-14 weak NT) following this bidding: 1NT - 4NT opener's rebids should be:

  • Pass = 12 HCP
  • 5NT = 13 HCP (partner will promote to 6NT with a maximum)
  • 6NT = 14 HCP

A similar seqence can be used with a 5NT response which invites to either a small slam or a grand slam depending on the pointcount of the opener.
