Quadrangle Club (University of Chicago)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Quadrangle Club is the name of a private club at the University of Chicago. It is located at 57th Street and University Avenue in Chicago. It has a full-service dining room, a bar, several lounges, and sleeping quarters for members and/or their guests. It has 17 sleeping rooms including 5 suites with an extra sitting room. It is one of the few locations in the city of Chicago that has clay tennis courts. The original club building stood at 58th Street and University Avenue, a site now occupied by the Oriental Institute. When that building was damaged by fire, architect Howard Van Doren Shaw was engaged to design a new one. Shaw designed a building resembling an English country house, with large open spaces and abundant natural light. (The fire-damaged clubhouse was moved two blocks west and became the University's Ingleside Hall.)

While the Quadrangle Club is the de facto University faculty club, University staff and even unaffiliated persons are welcome to join. Roughly one quarter of the club's membership are unaffiliated with the University.
