[edit] Tourist destinations
Quảng Ngãi is rarely touched by the booming Vietnamese tourist industry, and as such potential visitors should be aware that English is not spoken at all, and that the limited numbers of hotels are used to dealing only with Vietnamese customers. It also means that the many tourist buses that run the length of Vietnam do not stop in the town, Quảng Ngãi city can only really be reached by private car, or by rail (excluding 'express' services).
Local attractions include:
- Ba Tơ garden.
- Quảng Ngãi square. (Phạm Văn Đồng street)
- Trà Khúc river.
- Tam Thượng harbor.
- Thien But mountain.
[edit] Mỹ Lai
Quảng Ngãi city is the nearest major town to the site of the Mỹ Lai Massacre, its distance from any major tourist hub means visitors to the Mỹ Lai site should expect to spend a night in Quảng Ngãi city. The hamlet of Mỹ Lai was part of the village of Sơn Mỹ, and the memorial gardens and remains of the hamlet can be found in Sơn Mỹ village, a short taxi journey from Quảng Ngãi city.
The memorial gardens comprise some of the mass graves of the villagers, markers showing where the houses would have stood, and a recently added small museum which houses newspaper articles documenting the event from around the world, photos and statements from both the Vietnamese and the Americans. Also in the memorial gardens are some reconstructions of how a small number of the houses might have looked after the massacre, before the site was bombed in an attempt to eradicate evidence.
