QIAGEN (NASDAQ: QGEN, FWB: QIA) is the worldwide leading provider of sample and assay technologies for research in life sciences, applied testing and molecular diagnostics. Founded in 1984, QIAGEN N.V. today is a Dutch holding company with operational headquarters in Hilden, Germany and Germantown, United States. It has subsidiaries in 16 countries and employs more than 1900 people worldwide.

In biotechnology and the biological sciences it is often necessary to purify specific molecules such as nucleic acids, from other cell components. Before 1986, the collection of genetic information (DNA and RNA) was a very time consuming business. Then Metin Colpan, a founding father of QIAGEN, revolutionized this procedure — and biotechnology. His discovery reduced the time for the preparation of plasmid DNA — small, circular molecules found in bacterial cells — from three days down to two hours.

Today QIAGEN sells more than 500 consumable products and automated solutions for sample collection, nucleic acid and protein handling, separation, and purification and open and target specific assays. The products are sold in over 42 countries around the world to academic research markets, to leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, to applied testing customers (such as in forensics, veterinary, bio-defense and industrial applications) as well as to molecular diagnostics laboratories.
