Pyrokinesis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pyrokinesis from the Greek word for fire, "πυρ", and -kinesis, from "κίνησις", movement, motion, a suffix that denotes movement. Pyrokinesis is an ability (commonly considered fictional) to control, ignite, and/or extinguish fire using only the mind. Pyrokinesis is often confused with pyrogenesis. Pyrogenesis is the proper name for creating fire, fire, "πυρ", "κίνησις", "Creation".

Most characters in fiction who are described as pyrokinetic possess both abilities, such as The Human Torch, however, certain characters such as Marvel's Pyro (St. John Allerdyce) posses only the ability to control existing fires and cannot create the fire.

[edit] In fiction

The purported ability of pyrokinesis is often found in fictional contexts, such as the Stephen King novel Firestarter and in the DC, Marvel, and other comic book fictional universes.

A Firebender is someone with the ability to turn body heat in to controllable fire with in the Avatar: The Last Airbender Universe.
