[edit] Breeding

A Pyrapoo is a hybrid or mixed-breed dog, resulting from a Standard Poodle being bred with a Great Pyrenees, and can include Pyrapoos being bred back to a pure bred Standard Poodle or Great Pyrenees. In the pictures below, the Pyrapoo puppy Boudreaux on the left is what is considered a "pure" Pyrapoo as he is the result of a Standard Poodle being bred with a Great Pyrenees, and the three Pyrapoo puppies on the right are the result of a Pyrapoo being bred back to a Standard Poodle.

Like most Poodle hybrids, they have become more popular with the increase in demand for hypoallergenic dog breeds and the increased recognition of the hybrid vigor theory. However, the breeding of Poodles with other breeds for their hypoallergenic properties is not always successful or can result in mixed success. Pyrapoos are a rare Poodle hybrid, the most common are the Labradoodle, Goldendoodle and Schnoodle.

[edit] Appearance

A Pyrapoo's appearance is variable and can be closer to a Standard Poodle or a Great Pyrenees, but most likely will fall somewhere in between. In the picture above, the Pyrapoo puppy Boudreaux is a "pure" Pyrapoo and has the coloring typical of a Great Pyrenees with a white coat with apricot-colored ears.

The coat of a Pyrapoo is a combination of the ringlet curls of the Standard Poodle and the straight hair of a Great Pyrenees. Thus, the Pyrapoo has curls that are not quite as tight as a Standard Poodle. A Pyrapoo will shed some, unlike the Standard Poodle that does not shed, but will not shed nearly as much as a Great Pyrenees, which are known for their copious shedding. A Pyrapoo's shedding will primarily come in clumps, which is easier to clean and more hypoallergenic. Pyrapoos will likely need regular grooming and brushing to keep its hair from getting too long and matted.

A Pyrapoo will not grow to the large size of the Great Pyrenees (100+ lbs) and will be closer in size to the Standard Poodle (50+ lbs).

[edit] Temperament

Pyrapoos are independent and intelligent and can be somewhat standoffish and wary of strangers, an outgrowth of their protective nature. Pyrapoos are very warm and friendly, particularly with their families.
