Pyotr Kafarov

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pyotr Ivanovich Kafarov (Пётр Ива́нович Кафа́ров), also known by his monastic name Palladiy (Палла́дий), (18171878), was an early Russian sinologist.

Like his teacher Ioakinf Bichurin, Palladiy was a Russian Orthodox monk. During his stay in China, he discovered and published many invaluable manuscripts, including The Secret History of the Mongols.

Kafarov has designed a Cyrillization system for the Chinese language (it is known as the Palladiy system and is officially accepted in Russia).
