A pyeong is a unit of measurement in Korea corresponding to 3.31 square metres (400 / 121 m²) (3.954 square yards). It is used most often in referring to the sizes of rooms or buildings; a one-room apartment will generally be around 10 to 15 pyeong, a house somewhere around 50 or more, and the smallest of rooms, consisting of only a bed and a bit of floor space for students, will be as little as 1.5 pyeong.
Anectdotally, the unit was derived from the amount of space an average sized man would take up lying on the floor with his arms and legs spread out.
