Hello Pwu, welcome to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian. You can learn more on the how to edit page. The naming conventions and manual of style pages are also useful. Feel free to experiment at the Wikipedia:Sandbox. If you have any questions about the project then check out Wikipedia:Help or add a question to the Village pump. Angela

The Dallas pictures are excellent. Just two problems:

1. They may be too large for some browsers (particularly the damned alkward Internet Explorer) so need to be reduced in size somewhat, particularly the top on which has text wrapped it.

2. What is their source? Wiki has to be careful about images and as an encyclopædia has to avoid any breach of copyright. So if you have any information, please supply it on the image page. Without any source information there is the likelihood that they will have to be removed from the Dallas page. That would be a great pity because if we can have them then given their quality we would be mad not to. So if you have source information or evidence that they are copyright free, please do supply it. Enjoy the wikipedia. :-) FearÉIREANN 00:26 4 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hiya. Thanks for the message. (JTD here, not Ann! :-) ) I know the trials of trying to find images off the net. The trouble is that while most web pages can and do break copyright law (should they be 'caught', they promptly shut down and the owner disappears!) wiki cannot do so because, with over 100,000 articles and hundreds of contributors wiki obviously cannot 'shut and run' in the event of any legal difficulties. I have a hunch that given the quality of the images they may be produced by some public body, perhaps promoting Dallas tourism. Wiki basically needs either a grant of unrestricted usage (I is a bit more complicated but it is 6.33am here and I am too knackered to think! Check the link on copyright and you'll find the details) or what is called fair use (again complicated, but if wiki claims fair use it likes somewhere to be able to say where the image came from/who took it etc, so that if someone jumps up screaming about copyright, we can say 'we used it under fair use and went so far as to acknowledge its origins/photographer/agency, etc. That sort of info goes a long way to mollifying irate people worrying over copyright.

So basically the more info that you can provide the better. if you want guidance, ask someone like User:Maveric149. Mav is very helpful and will be able to give you help. But as I say, the whole issue of copyright is very very touchy because wiki cannot afford to get into legal difficulties over its right to use images.

Re their size, I checked and yes the top image is way to big. It is something like 430+ in width. The absolute maximum should be 300. I know it sounds small but some browsers (principally the hideously awful Internet Explorer) tend to make images and captions bigger on a page than other browsers.

An image of width 300 around which
text wraps produces a column about
this size even with the deadly annoying
Internet Explorer.
.

However a 400+
width image
using Internet
Explorer can
reduce text
to a column
of this size,
hideously
distorting
the page.

I learned that from experience. Though I personally hate something as small as 300 in width it really is the maximum if pages are not to appear all scrunched up on IE. Even having the image totally separate from text can cause problems the damned IE. (One of IE's other curses is that it reads italicised captions differently on wiki, often turning them into barely legible spidery text. (Though Netscape goes one step further by reading captions written in small size as full size, throwing pages carefully laid out by people into utter chaos, with overlapping captions and pictures, weird text wraps. Sometimes I think that God created Internet Explorer and Netscape as a cruel joke to annoy computer users!)

My 'favourite' IP nightmare involved playing ping pong with an image!. On my screen the image location looked all wrong. I changed it, someone got annoyed and screamed 'what the hell did you do that for? You have mucked up the page!' before moving it back. And their action threw my page into chaos and looked hideous, so I changed it back, they changed it again . . . Finally after a fierce battle and all sorts of accusations, we discovered that the problem was IE. For some reason it showed the picture in one location on my screen, in another on the other person's. So each 'fix' made by me screwed up the other person's page, and their changes screwed up mine, because we were being shown 2 different versions of the one page! That was the day I abandoned IE and moved to Safari!!! It is much much better.

If you cannot shrink the image down I will do it for you, but not tonight, as I am too knackered. Anyway, enjoy the wiki. Don't worry about making the odd muck up or two. We all have done so. Have a word with Mav for guidance on images; if he doesn't know he will be able to direct you to someone who will. And the more information you can find on the sources of those images the better. Happy wiki-ing. FearÉIREANN 05:58 4 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Please stop. If you continue to blank pages, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. —Řÿūłóñģ (竜龍) 09:53, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Please make your tests in a personal sandbox before doing that massive change to the article. A lot of it was poorly formatted, which is why I have reverted it, again.—Řÿūłóñģ (竜龍) 19:18, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:KFCnewlogo.png)

Thanks for uploading Image:KFCnewlogo.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. [edit] Category killer

The list of category killers you've re-added:

a) Is unreferenced b) Has serious inaccuracies c) Is completely inadequate if it is to stay (there are regional differences, and the list would have to encompass all the world, not just a couple countries

In short, the list is, I'm afraid, going to have to stay gone.

[edit] Re: About Boomburb

Quoted:

Snickerdo, don't hold your breath about any lack of edit wars with Trorov. If you've looked through the history of the boomburb Wikipedia entry, you will see how long the war has gone on, back and forth. For weeks, if not months. I support your changes 100% and have always undone Trorov's edits if he undoes mine.

Well, I put him up on the noticeboard and he's been blocked for 48 hours. If it continues, they'll just continue to block him for longer periods. I wouldn't worry, it appears that the admins now know what's going on. Good to know I'm not alone in this, though. Have a great evening! Snickerdo 04:33, 14 March 2007 (UTC)
