Puttur, Tamil Eelam

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Puttur is where the first school providing free education was established in Tamil Eelam and in Sri Lanka. Hon Malzawarajar established the J/Sri Somaskanda College (யா/ஸ்றீ சோமாஸ்கந்த கல்லூரி), originally a Hindu based college in Puttur. This was during the period when fee charging Christian schools were dominant all over Sri Lanka and Tamil Eelam as the British were the colonial masters at that time.

The famous Sivan Kovil, many Hindu establishments, the famous near-free American mission run hospital and the now free American Mission (protestant) school, the pioneering J/Sri Somaskanda College are some of the landmarks of Puttur.

The yearly poongawanam (பூங்காவனம்) festival held in friendly competition between (புத்தூர்) Puttur Sivan Kovil and the neighbouring (ஆவரங்கால்) Avarangal Sivan Kovil were the climax of activities before the war of Tamil Eelam Independence started. People of Puttur and Avarangal are longing for the resumption of this tradition to be held, preferably in Independent Tamil Eelam.
