Puttaparthi ( 14°9.91′N, 77°48.70′E) is the birth place and abode of Sathya Sai Baba. Situated in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, Puttaparthi draws thousands of the guru's devotees from all over the world. Puttaparthi houses Prashanthi Nilayam, the ashram of the Baba.

It used to be a small, isolated, backward village till the late 1960s when the presence of Sathya Sai Baba attracted devotees. Prasanthi Nilayam, the home of Sri Satya Sai Baba, is famous worldwide.23rd November is Sathya Sai Baba's birthday, and millions of his devotess gather to celebrate and receive his blessings.

Puttaparthi is well connected to Ananthapur (84 km) , Hyderabad (472 km) and Bangalore (156 km) by APSRTC buses.KSRTC buses also ply from Bangalore.

Puttaparthi is just a 3 hour drive from Bangalore by car.From Bangalore,one has to take National Highway 7 till Penukonda and then turn right on the Puttaparthi road.

Puttaparthi has a railway station (Sri Satya Sai Prasanthi Nilayam) which started functioning on 23 November 2000 (Baba's 75th birthday).But as of now,very few trains,all coming from Bangalore,pass through this station.Also,it is about 12 km from the ashram.The nearest major railway station is at Dharmavaram (45 km),where one can board a train to anywhere in India.Dharmavaram railway station itself is connected to Puttaparthi by APSRTC buses.

Puttaparthi has a small airport which is connected only to Mumbai and Chennai by Indian Airlines.It is about 9 km from the ashram.The nearest major airport is at Bangalore.

Puttaparthi also has a charitable hospital (General Hospital), the Anjaneya (Hanuman) Swamy Temple, the Village Mosque, the Sathyabhama Temple, and the Sri Sathya Sai Hill View Stadium,Sri Sathya Sai Space Theatre, Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences(Super Speciality Hospital),Chaitanya Jyothi Museum, Sri Sathya Sai Mirpuri Music College. An indoor stadium is also coming up.

Whilst the main attraction at Puttaparthi is Sai Baba, visitors can get a good idea of Indian village life by hiring an autorickshaw and doing a tour of the lake and surrounding villages. It will take about 2 hours. Take your camera as there is lots to photograph and you'll capture some memorable scenes of how Indians really live.
