From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Puthuppally is a Panchayat headquarters town in the Kottayam district of the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of the Kodoor River. This village is famous for the 16th-century St. George Orthodox church. The feast of this church, held in May 6th and May 7th, is famous and attracts a lot of pilgrims from all over Kerala. The town also has a Siva temple, and there is a Panachikad Temple nearby.

Agriculture is the major source of revenue in this place. Coconut, paddy and pepper were the major crops cultivated here. However, rubber is the major cash crop nowadays; paddy cultivation is almost nil. The Rubber Board of India has its major office in this village, and the building also houses the Rubber Research Institute of India. There are also other smaller rubber processing companies.

Good schools and proximity to educational institutions in Kottayam and Changanacherry have given good education to the people. These include Don Bosco higher secondary school, St. George's orthodox higher secondary school, Darshana International and others.

The ex-Chief Minister of Kerala Sri, Oommen Chandy, has represented the Puthuppally Legislative Constituency for around 35 years. Also from Puthuppally are prominent Malayalam author Vettom Mani and the famous scientist George Sudarshan, as well as the great Astrologist Kizhakkel Abraham Varghese (Kochayan).
