Puss in Boots is a character from Shrek 2, voiced in English and Spanish by Antonio Banderas. Apparently, the cat is considered the obvious choice for assassinating Shrek, who is an ogre, because Puss has killed a notorious ogre before. However, he does not try any tricks this time, but makes an open frontal assault on Shrek, although his tactic of making an enemy lower his defenses by taking on an innocent look like a forlorn kitten is also extremely effective. He does this twice in the movie, at first to Shrek, and the last time to the malicious F.F.A.P.D.

Puss in boots is also a fictional bedtime story character.

He is also Spanish instead of French — El Gato con Botas — instead of Le Chat Botté. This is meant to strike a parallel with Zorro, as the character imitates Zorro's mannerisms (in particular, Banderas' prior appearance as the swashbuckling hero in the film The Mask of Zorro). In one scene of Shrek 2, he carves a "P" into a tree, a parody of Zorro carving a "Z" into a tree.

He is planned to appear in Shrek the Third and the spin-off movie, Puss in Boots: The Story of an Ogre Killer.

[edit] Shrek 2

In the second movie Fiona's father, King Harold, unhappy with the fact that her husband, Shrek, is an ogre, hired Puss to kill Shrek. After Puss started attacking Shrek, Puss started coughing up a hairball, and his defences were lowered. As Shrek spared Puss's life, Puss vowed to repay his debt to Shrek and become his ally.
