Purse Bearer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Pursebearer is an ancient official in the Royal Households of the United Kingdom.

The purse is a large velvet bag, decorated with the Royal Coat of Arms, and is most commonly seen at two ceremonial occasions:

1) At the State Opening of Parliament in Westminster, when it carries the Queen's Speech: The Lord Chancellor carries the purse to the throne and hands the speech to the Queen to read out to the assembled Lords and Commons.

2) The opening of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh, when the Queen's address to the General Assembly is read by the Lord High Commissioner to the assembled members of the Church of Scotland.
