Purpurascens (elm cultivar)

The possible Smooth-leaved Elm U. minor subsp. minor cultivar Purpurascens was listed by Lavallee in Arb. Segrez. 236, 1877, as U. campestris var. purpurascens, but without description, and later by Schneider in Ill. Handb. Laubh. 1: 220, 1904. Krussmann in Handb. Laubgeh. 2: 540, 1962, identified it as a cultivar. Reputed to have small leaves approximately 25 mm long, tinged with purple when young, but turning dark-green later, and usually remaining a shrub.
