Puriscal Canton

Puriscal Canton, the fourth of the cantons of San José Province, owes his name to the flower of the common bean. Puriscal Canton limits with Mora to the north, Acosta to the east, Turrubares to the west, and with the puntarenense canton of Parrita to the south. Its capital is Santiago de Puriscal.

The canton has 553.7 km² and 29,407 inhabitants in 2000 (53 inhab. per km²)

Puriscal Canton was founded in 1868. Its ordinary municipal budget for 2003 was of ¢ 212 millions.

Only 18% of its population lives in urban areas. 20.2% of its inhabitants are under 10 years old, and 7.4% over 65.
