Purasawalkam or Purasaiwalkam is also known as Kaka thopu in older days though this information may not be authentic which means Hub of Crows.
Purasaiwalkam or Purasai is one of the important places in Chennai. Known as busy Shopping Center, Purasaiwalkam is basically a residential place. Today this place has grown into a huge shopping complex. Purasai is very much nearer to both the Chennai Railway stations, Chennai Central and Egmore.
Thana Street one of the busiest streets in Chennai is the heart of Purasaiwalkam. Thana Street is famous for its Jewelleries and pharmacies. Thana Street also comprises a grocery market which is kept busy throughout the day.
Abirami Mega Mall is one of the main attractions in Purasaiwalkam, which is a cineplex. It comprises four main theatres andmany shopping outlets. Purasai also contains the Motcham Theatre and Mekala Theatre. Roxy Theatre is now functioning as a textile showroom mall.
Madhar Sha, Sree Krishna, Textile India, Ranjanas are the main Textile showrooms found here. Apart from this there resides the Viveks, Vasanthan & Co., Next, Rathana Stores.
Apart from the shopping malls there resides the famous and the oldest landmarked Hotel by name "Welcome". The other renowned hotels are Doveton, Romus and the Deccan.

Purasaiwalkam is the heart of the Chennai Education. One can find number of Institutions in and around Purasai. Churches and Temples
Purasai also contains a huge Lutheran Church by name Adaikalanathar Church operated under the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church( TELC). St. Paul'c Church, St. Mathias Church, Emmanuel Methodist, Tamil Methodist and Apostlic Church are some of the Churches present there.
Kangatheeshwar Temple is a one of the oldest temples in Chennai.
