Pungo, Virginia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pungo is a rural community located in the southern portion of the independent city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA. Because the community is located in an independent city, there has been no individual census for the unincorporated town, which was originally located in Princess Anne County until 1963. However, as of 2004 the estimated population is approximately 100 inhabitants. Like most of southern Virginia Beach, the area is surrounded by farmland.
Pungo is known for its Pungo Strawberry Festival, which is held there every Spring. Also well-known is the legend of Grace Sherwood, the so-called "Witch of Pungo". Notable features of the area are the historic downtown intersection and the Pleasant Ridge Bridge, which local skateboarders tend to frequent.
[edit] Location
Pungo is located about ten miles south of the heart of Virginia Beach, and is about 15 miles southeast of the Norfolk International Airport.
