Pumpkin Vine Railroad
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Coal Branch of the Danville, Illinois and Vincennes Railroad (known as the "Pumpkin Vine Railroad") was constructed in 1872 across Warren County, Indiana and down to Coal Creek, or Stringtown as it is now called, below Covington, to carry coal. Sumner Station was located at the intersection with the Wabash Railroad. G. W. Johnson saw an opportunity and established the town of Johnsonville at the intersection, and the post office opened on July 8, 1875. A riot at Stringtown brought a sudden end to the "Pumpkin Vine", and in 1878 service was discontinued and the rails were taken up shortly thereafter. As of 2007, there are still places where traces of the grade can be seen.
