Puerto Berrío

Puerto Berrío is a municipality in the Colombian department of Antioquia.
Puerto Berrío is a Colombian municipality, located in the zone of the Average Magdalena of the department of Antioquia of that country. It limits by the north with the municipalities of Yolombó, Remedios and Yondó, by the east with the department of Santander, by the south with the municipalities of Puerto Nare and Caracolí, and by the west with the municipalities of Caracolí and Maceo. Its dista head 191 kilometers of the city of Medellín, capital of Antioquia. The municipality has an extension of 1,184 kilometers square.

In 1801, Alexander von Humbolt drew up an official sketch of the place then known like Great Eddy in the region of the today Puerto Berrío. Later, the Cuban engineer Francisco Javier Cisneros, constructor of the Railroad of Antioquia, would select this same place to construct a port for the department of Antioquia, Colombia, on the Magdalena river, in order to take until the railroad and to construct a terminal station there.
In 1875, the government of Antioquia decreed to the place like administrative fraction and port in honor to the governor who then had Antioquia, that was then the general Pedro Justo Berrío. By means of governmental act of that year, the port receives the official name of Puerto Berrío.
The luck of Puerto Berrío was bound to the railroad. With the arrival of the first train to Medellín in 1914 is generated an impulse to the railroad and a greater use of the port by means of the ships that moved to the load and passengers to the North coast or the rear area.
In 1925, a fire devastated all the population, with the exception of the facilities of the Railroad. The town reconstructed, and began a time golden for the locality. Puerto Berrío became epicenter of the regional commerce and site forced for the transit of load, passengers and tourists. This although economic one lasted until 1963, when Railroad of Antioquia was nationalized and Railroad of Costa was united to and to the Railroad of the Pacific.
In 1991 was created, with constitutional rank, the Corporation of the Great river of the Magdalena, in order to recover the navigability of the river.
Nowadays, it is an intermediate city of great movement commercial, and is considered the capital of the Antioquian Mid-Magdalena, with a history related to Magdalena river and to Railroad of Antioquia . Its condition of multimodal port, the possibility of connection with Medellín, Bogotá, department of Santander and North Coast by land, and their airport, has been determining in the development of the region. Majestic Hotel Magdalena recovered well like witness of more than 125 years of history, and attractive the natural exuberantes, are his more appraised tourist treasures to the date.

Origin of the name: In tribute to the governor was baptized Puerto Berrío Pedro Justo Berrío. Was called initially Grande Eddy .
