[edit] Welcome; images

Hello Pubuman, and welcome to Wikipedia!

Thank you for finding a picture of Muttiah Muralitharan. Unfortunately, we're not allowed to use it. Pictures you find on other websites can generally not be used on Wikipedia, because they are copyright. You can normally only use pictures you took yourself, or if you have the permission of the photographer; or ones which are so old that copyright no longer applies.

Thanks,

Stephen Turner (Talk) 17:14, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply, Pubuman. No, press agency photos like AFP and Reuters and Getty Images are definitely not public domain. Their whole business is based around selling those photos and they don't allow anyone to copy them without paying! A photo doesn't become public domain just because you found it on a website somewhere: only if the photographer explicitly says that it's public domain.
I wish this weren't true. The articles look much better with photos in them, but unfortunately it's illegal for us to copy those photos.

[edit] POV

You made this edit to Talk:Michael Jackson which violates the policy of NPOV and labelled it "REVERT VANDALISM". Could you explain that please? Tyrenius 20:04, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

OK, I see you're a new user. Read up on 3 important policies NPOV, NOR and WP:VERIFY. Also be careful of labelling anything vandalism if it is a difference of opinion. Tyrenius 20:07, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, my fault. I misread the edit summary. Durr. There's been a bad history on that talk page and from time to time I intervene to remind people there are such things as policy. Happy editing! Tyrenius 20:11, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for helping me to improve my observational skills. Anything that can be done to get things in line on that page with verification etc would be a great help. Feel free to challenge things on that basis. Let me know if you need backup (but don't threaten people with it though!). I've left a prominent note at the bottom of the talk page. Tyrenius 20:15, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

It's good to fill in the little edit summary box each time - you'll never become an admin if you don't! You can change your preference settings to remind you to do so. Just make sure you don't set the settings to marking everything as a minor edit, as that's only something for spelling, punctuation etc. Tyrenius 20:19, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Need help

Hello again, Pubuman. No, I can't block anyone because I'm not an administrator.

If you see some vandalism, the best thing is to put a warning on the vandal's page. If it continues, put a second warning, telling them that they will be blocked if they continue. That's usually enough to stop them, but if they still continue after that, put a note on WP:AIV, and an administrator will block them.

Normally the person will be blocked for 24 hours the first time, but if they come back and do some more vandalism it will be 48 hours, and then increasing amounts of time if necessary.

You can read more about the policy at WP:VANDAL.

Hope that helps,

[edit] Chola Map

Hi, Thanks for trying to dispel some of the arguments around the extent of the Chola empire. However you changes aren't accurate. The claim that Cholas occupied the entire island of Sri Lanka during the reign of Rajendra Chola I and took the Sinhala king Mahinda V prisoner. See KAN Sastri's The Colas pp 194 - 210 - Parthi talk/contribs 22:16, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

It's ok. I have already reverted. Thanks... Parthi talk/contribs 22:21, 16 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your comment at User talk:RaveenS

You recently made a comment at RaveenS' talk page to which I would like to reply. All articles should adhere to a neutral point of view, which requires that all major viewpoints be presented. Some things we can treat as fact; others we should note as being only viewpoints. Ideally, we should attribute disputed claims to the whomever made them, rather than accepting them as facts.

I think your statement about the constant appearance of the LTTE's counterclaim to the GOSL is exaggerated: there are many instances where it is missing (and often rightly so). I disagree that "there is no place on an encyclopedia for terrorist claims"; that is the very opposite of adhering to a "neutral point of view". Wikipedia is not the place to air hostility against various groups (whether governments or otherwise). Such claims, if significant, should be noted and attributed to the terrorist group. I alos disagree that LTTE claims are "constantly pushed through" and instead believe that such additions are (usually) made in good faith to adhere to the neutrality policy.
