Pub team

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In football (soccer), a pub team is traditionally an amateur team arranged by members of a pub to play against other local pubs.

In more recent times, the term pub team is also used by supporters of successful teams as a derogative remark to refer to any lower quality team, not necessarily amateurs.

On 26 December 2006 Heart of Midlothian FC beat local rivals Hibernian FC by 3 goals to 2. Hibs manager John Collins is reported to have described the opposition as a pub team. This did not sit comfortably with the Hearts players who had posters of the slur pinned to the walls of their dressing room during their next encounter at Easter Road on 1 April 2007.[1] This time Hearts won by 1 goal to nil. As of Saturday 7 April 2007 Hearts have started to use the theme tune from Cheers at their Tynecastle ground.[2]
