Psychomanteum

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Psychomanteum (sometimes spelt as Psychomantium, and often called Mirror Gazing) is a mirrored room which has been specially set up to communicate with the spiritual realm. Mirrors or any reflective objects were considered a conduit to the spiritual world in ancient times.

The Psychomanteum dates back to ancient Greece, where a person would gaze into a still pool of water. This silent and steady gazing into a reflective pool would produce apparitions or visions that were probably answers to the questions one was looking for. It is said that in the Victorian era, mirrored rooms were specially built to summon or contact spirits from the spirit world.

Mirror Gazing is practiced to this day. These days a mirror is set up in a darkened room with a comfortable chair so that the person intending to see the visions can relax. A very dull light is placed at some point behind the chair. The chair or the mirror is placed at such an angle so that the person cannot see his own profile in the mirror. The person then seated and relaxed gazes into the mirror.

Claims have been made that apparitions of loved ones were seen. In some cases they saw smoke, lights, geometric shapes, etc. It has never been confirmed whether denizens from the spirit world have ever been summoned in this manner, or whether the apparitions really appeared.
