[edit] compu-lang-stub

I modified {{compu-lang-stub}} so at puts articles in Category:Programming languages and not in (illogical place) Category:Computer science. Any objections? Cheers, --R.Koot 21:02, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] computer science categorization

Would you be interested in finding out which computer (science) related categories there are and making some guidelines on using them. I find, for example, Category:Computer architecture and Category:Computer hardware to be ambiguous. An important case may be Category:Computer science, I have a very theoretical view on it. I would rather included Category:Programming languages as Computer science > Software engineering > Programming languages and only put the classical subjects as Algorithms and Data structures directly in it. --R.Koot 21:50, 20 July 2005 (UTC)

Have you seen how Wiki Books is handling Computer Science?
Logical constructs do belong much more in software, not restricted to programs, for example, consider triggers on files ... a type of logical construct that uses no program, is part of the data base architecture.
However, there is an overlap with hardware, such as the role of special purpose, as opposed to general purpose, computers.

[edit] Image:Dimitris .gif

This image was tagged as public domain, but it is probably copyright by the newspaper or the cartoonist (Dimitris Hantzopoulos - you should have also added his full name). Did you ask for permission? Adia 19:17, 2005 August 14 (UTC)

OK, but if you don't ask for permission and just ignore the copyright, you shouldn't say that the image is public domain... Maybe you could claim fair use, but I don't think this is the proper context. You should write an article about Dimitris Hantzopoulos and use it there as an illustration ;-) Adia 09:25, 2005 August 15 (UTC)
I'll see if I can create some articles (at least stubs) about greek cartoonists... Also I'll continue your translation of Nikolas Asimos into english, if you don't mind. About Malakas, I'm sorry but I think it does belong in Wiktionary. [edit] Derivation of pedo-/paedo- words

While trying to clean up Paedobaptism which has a rather messy explanation of its derivation, I looked up Paediatrics and Paedophilia to see their take on the greek stem, and both of them use different Greek words again as the source! I suspect this may be not only a consistency problem but also accuracy on at least two articles' part. I've been told you're the best person to ask about these things, so I was wondering if you were able to shed some light on the issue. Cheers --BigBlueFish 09:58, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Pedo- comes from the root "πεδ-" that in greek gives words like "πέδιση"="standing" (not exactly-sorry my english is not so good and I don;t now the exact word), "πεδίο"="field", "γήπεδο" (γη=earth) ="sports' ground" and others.
Paedo- comes from "Παις" (genitive:Παιδός (paidos)) meaning "child".
As an example, have a look at orthopedics. It comes from "ortho-" = "correct" and "ped-". Therefore, the form "orthopaedics" used in the past is wrong. Because orthopedics has something to do with the "correct way of standing" and not with the "correct child" :).--Mik2 21:08, 12 October 2005 (UTC)

Yeah... I was referring to words containing pedo as an Americanisation; Project2501a sort of cleared it up in my talk. --BigBlueFish 19:53, 22 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedians in Greece

Hi, I understand that you are either Greek Wikipedian or a Wikipedian living in/with an interest in Greece.

The category page Wikipedians/Greece has been replaced with Category:Wikipedians in Greece but your name still appears on the old list. You might considering moving it. You might also consider adding adding Template:Greekwiki to your user page.

A Wikipedia:Greek Wikipedians' notice board has been in existence for some time but is terribly underutilised. It would certainly benefit from your involvement.--Damac 12:26, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Conscription in Greece

I'd like to add some elements about Greek Army, peculiar to Greece, that seem alien to other countries, as well as the 'importance' of conscription and the army in general. For example a foreign person was amazed when I mentioned that army partcakes in parades of national celebrations. Also we need some references of the army in pop culture, like that a man proves his manhood only if he conscribes, while if he denies he is deemed useless by society and the law even prohibits him to work. It is also said that 'Woman has to give birth, man has to go to the army' that shows adequately the whole picture in the Greek's mind. I think you are more qualified to add these things in the appropriate article, or I would put it myself. Do you think they are important to add? Pictureuploader 08:28, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

An image that you uploaded, Image:Georges Perec.jpg, has been listed at Wikipedia:Copyright problems because it is a suspected copyright violation. Please look there if you know that the image is legally usable on Wikipedia (you may have to search for the title of the image to find its entry), and then provide the necessary information there and on its page, if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you.

This image does not fall in any category acceptable as Fair Use according to the United States law, and not even under the Wikipedia policy.

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

This image may be deleted at anytime because its licencing terms is invalid, and it may even break international copyright and author's right rules (for publications) and the French law applicable to:

  • the publisher's right of LeMonde.fr (a wellknown french commercial dialy newspaper) that hosts this site
  • the policy of LeMonde.fr applicable to personal blogs hosted by LeMonde.fr
  • the author's right for the blog from where this photo was taken.
  • the very restrictive law protecting french people's image, even after their death (french person rights belong to their successor family for a long period).
  • I think that this photo comes from a book cover, and if so, the book publisher owns the copyright and publication rights (so even the blog on LeMonde.fr cannot reproduce it without authorization).
  • Note that the blog you are citing DOES NOT reference directly this photo, so LeMonde may have not reviewed the policy applicable to it.
  • The photo seems to have been edited to remove the copyright labels or the author's signature or the name of the photographer (who also owns rights, unless he was payed by the book publisher to take this photo.)

See Talk:Georges Perec for further justifications and talks (or the talk page of the image itself regarding the copyright infringement)... Thanks. verdy_p 01:17, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Slick Rick.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Slick Rick.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Please signify the copyright information on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. --Michalis Famelis 21:21, 17 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] HERE! I'M WRITING THIS IN ALL-CAPS, SO THAT EVEN A BIGOT LIKE YOU LEARNS WHAT WIKIPEDIA POLICY IS

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Avoid_weasel_words

Taken from Wikipedia's guidelines. Weasel words are words or phrases that smuggle bias into seemingly supported statements by attributing opinions to anonymous sources. Weasel words give the force of authority to a statement without letting the reader decide if the source of the opinion is reliable. If a statement can't stand on its own without weasel words, it lacks neutral point of view; either a source for the statement should be found, or the statement should be removed.

For example, "Montréal is the nicest city in the world," is a biased or normative statement. Application of a weasel word can give the illusion of neutral point of view: "Some people say Montreal is the nicest city in the world."

Although this is an improvement, since it no longer states the opinion as fact, it remains uninformative. Who says that? You? Me? When did they say it? How many people think that? What kind of people think that? Where are they? What kind of bias do they have? Why is this of any significance?

Weasel words don't really give a neutral point of view; they just spread hearsay, or couch personal opinion in vague, indirect syntax. It is better to put a name and a face on an opinion than to assign an opinion to an anonymous source.

Here are some weasel words that are often found in Wikipedia articles (but shouldn't be):

   * "Some people say..."
   * "Some argue..."

So then, that includes insertion of your pro-terrorist bias into the article on Greece's domestic terrorism. You keep editing your bias into the article, asshole, and I'll keep striking out until you find a proper reference.

—The preceding unsigned comment was added by 212.251.123.49 (talkcontribs).

[edit] Message from User:Porfyrios

Well, well. The message below is actually quite sensible, provided you ignore the tone.. Here's the thing. He's right. You can't insert your particular opinions under a vague "many people think" banner ; it's just not allowed in here. And that's exactly what you insist on doing in the "domestic terrorism" section of the article Greece. So, my friend, either you search for citations that back your entry, or I'm reporting you to the administrator board for abusing the rules (apparently, the vandalism board is not responsible for this sort of thing). I'm sure there are plenty of places you can troll for relevant citations. Your warning has been served. Bye, bye, now, have fun. Porfyrios 08:13, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

Hilarious titles. Really, that was comedy gold. I was split in half laughing. Gag me with a spoon.

    • Other than that, all I'm saying is, be reasonable in your edits.
    • Don't troll, don't use weasel-wording to infuse articles with your agenda, and don't ignore valid criticisms. Porfyrios 09:42, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I wanted to stop by and thank you for your constructive criticism of my RFA. It's helped, and is helping, to improve me as a wikipedian and an editor. I look forward to gaining your support in the future. Until then, keep on keepin on. SWATJester Ready Aim Fire! 19:27, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Human rights in Greece

Nice edits on that article - eliminating the normative language and assigning agency, as it were. Subtle, but very constructive. Don't you think this article could be expanded? Just what you have on your user page alone would flesh out the conscription issue, and I could summarize the mistreatment of refugees and asylum-seekers (when I have time).

Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Zamanfou"

[edit] most trustworthy institutions ?!@#%%&*??

  • Εμπιστευεστε τους πολιτικους ;
  • Τις πολυεθνικες;
  • Την εκκλησια που προσευχεται για τη σωτηρια μας ;
  • Το στρατο που μας φυλαει απο τους Τουρκους;
  • Την αστυνομια που πιανει τους κλεφτες;

  • Σε ποιον θα εμπιστευοσασταν τη διακυβερνηση του τοπου;
  • Σε μια στρατιωτικη χουντα;
  • Σε μια αστυνομικη χουντα;
  • Στους παπαδες;
  • Στις πολυεθνικες;
  • Σε ενα δημοκρατικα εκλεγμενο πολιτικο κομα;

[edit] Wireless Central Coordinated Protocol (WiCCP)

I made some changes on the Hidden node problem page and just noticed that it seems that you intended to create a WiCCP page (in 2005 ;-). I removed the dangling link for now, re-add it if appropriate. BTW any idea what the status of the WiCCP software is? It seems to be dormant. Is it in use at Patras anymore? As there is a Windows version of it (that for example Frottle lacks) I think it would be a good idea to set up a sourceforge project or at least provide the sources for the Windows software, too :-). However Kalomoira is mostly attacked by intellectuals and leftists and generally enemies of pop music. Although she is famed for her high charisma, natural charm and overall innocent image, her 'enemies' mostly accuse her for low mentality and citing that the last thing 'degraded' Greek society needs, is idolising an imported bimbo archetype.

Due to aiming and younger audiences, the fact that her promotion by the image makers' is trying to establish an 'innocent' and some kind of baby look of Britney Spears standards, is often satirized, since it's a concept never factualised for any Greek singer before. Sakis Rouvas also suffered from similar attacks.

[edit] Image Tagging Image:Barrington Levy.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Barrington Levy.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -SCEhardT 12:31, 1 July 2006 (UTC)
