I haven't decided on a sig yet. I'm not too worried about it, but I appreciate you showing me how to set one up. I'll do it soon, but I generally have too much of an engineer's eye to do a good job of decorative stuff ;-) Thanks! TomTheHand 00:05, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
New Outlook
Well after my argument with another user I have decided to revert to being an anti-vandal and new user welcomer. Any other wikiwork of mine will be done carefully.

Surprised?
No, not really. :-) BD2412 talk 01:46, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Subst:
Hi Prodego, the curly braces mean that a template is being specified. There is a separate template namespace in wikipedia that has the article name prefixed with "template". E.g., "template:welcome" is the article name you would use in the left hand search box to see the text that is used when a welcome message is put in. It can be edited like any other article. You are right that subst: does a one-time substition of that text into the article and gets rid of the template curly brackets. This is done for three reasons on welcome messages: 1. It is more personal to see the text rather than just the inserted template alone; 2. It is more efficient for the servers - they don't have to look up the current contents of the template article and substitute it in every time the page is accessed; and 3. The contents of the welcome message won't change over time. The advantage of a non-substed template is that changing the content of the template article will change what appears on all pages that use the non-substed template simultaneously, which is great if things are subject to change. Hope this helps, Fawcett5 13:39, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Greeting template
Some people have their own version of {{welcome}} (Template:Welcome) and use it when they welcome newcomers. The best place for you to suggest your new template is at Wikipedia talk:Welcoming committee so others could use it as well, or you could suggest changes to the current welcome template at Template talk:Welcome, but I would discuss it first before making changes, as there is already a lot of discussion about the current template. I don't know much about adding it to the list of template, your best bet is to ask around on the talk pages over there. best, Kewp (t) 14:28, 21 October 2005 (UTC)

"Someone messed up"
Yeah, that was me. A couple of people told me a while ago that the 'test' templates are a bit of a strain on the servers if they are not used with "subst:". So when I leave a new message, I sometimes add the "subst:" to the templates that are already on the page. Apparently, that went wrong this time... Thanks for fixing it. Block
I blocked that username because usernames with "Wikipedia" in them are generally considered to be against policy, for a number of reasons, including that they may be seen as officially sanctioned and/or endowed with some offical capacity/powers. -- Essjay · Talk 18:16, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
- I used {{Usernameblock}} as the block reason, which displays fully as
Your username has been blocked indefinitely because it is either inappropriate or too similar to an existing username (see our blocking policy for more information). You are encouraged to create a new account and contribute to Wikipedia under a more appropriate username, and in a constructive manner. See Wikipedia:Username for guidance on selecting an appropriate username. You may also edit Wikipedia without creating an account. You are not allowed to edit Wikipedia under an inappropriate username. If you would like to discuss the block, you may edit your talk page or email the administrator who blocked you.
Due to Wikipedia's mechanism for enforcing name changes, your IP address may be temporarily blocked. Unless you have also been engaging in vandalism or impersonation of another user, we will remove that block as soon as possible—if this doesn't happen within an hour or so, please email an administrator and explain the situation (see the list of administrators).
If you want to keep the contributions from your old account for your new one, leave a note on Wikipedia:Changing username. This can only be done before you create the new one. If you wish to create a new username, please visit Wikipedia:Changing username for information.
- on the blocked user page when they try to edit. (See Mediawiki:Blockedtext) I'll put it on the talk page too (I always do), I've just been running after {{Supertroll}} and haven't gotten over there yet. -- Essjay · Talk 18:21, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
We identify sockpuppets a couple of ways; the most complex is via a sockcheck of the IPs. In this case, however, it's much easier: First, we notice that two vandals do the very same thing and say the very same thing, and second, everytime SuperTroll creates a new username, he/she posts a list of the accounts he/she has used so far on the userpage. No need for a sockcheck there! ;-) -- Essjay · Talk 18:27, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Re:Mr Hobbs
Yes, sorry. I normally would, although in this case I suspected it as being a logged in IP-vandal, so I took it staight to 3. Sorry again. FireFox 18:22, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Re: Out
No, I'm in, I just haven't changed my icon. The nonsense usernames you saw are a vandalbot, and they are being blocked by Curps, who is running a blockbot. -- Essjay · Talk 18:54, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
Re: Apologies
Thank you so much for apologizing. Hopefully you've learned that it's best not to assume or give pre-emptive warnings. :) Assume good faith, after all. Good luck with your work on Wikipedia, and may the Wikigods bless you with Wikihappiness and other unnecessary wiki-prefixed things.
Oh, PS: I'm supposed to be on a wikibreak. I forgot that my homepage is Wikipedia. ;) From this point on, no editing for me. Really. I promise. Honest to Jimbo. Starting . . . now. :) User:Purplefeltangel/sig 19:01, 21 October 2005 (UTC)
