Prowler (Farscape)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A prowler is a fictional one or two crew starfighter piloted by Peacekeepers in the television show Farscape. It is armed with two pulse cannons, one on each wingtip, and is used for short range missions. It is also capable of being outfitted with anti-ship ordnance such as missiles or torpedoes. It is also outfitted with a shielding system. It is usually positioned within a fleet surrounding a Command carrier. It is assumed that since the fuel levels for a ship that small cannot be great, that they must dock with the carrier for refueling.
Prowlers have also been used by Scorpius in his ever psychotic quest for wormhole weapons. Prowlers have traveled through wormholes, but on every trip the pilot was liquidized. This problem was never solved, but John Crichton did assume it was the metaphasic of his ship that allowed him to survive his trips through the wormholes.
Another adaptation to the prowler's systems was made when a biological missile was added to it that would stop all functions within a Leviathan. However, the extra weight affected the flight characteristics considerably, making it a poor bomber rather than an excellent fighter. This weapon did not kill Moya - the crew shut her down and fooled Braca into destroying a vessel that looked like Moya. This failure was blamed on the missiles designer and she was sent to the Aurora chair. If it had hit its target, it is most likely the weapon would have killed Moya.
It operates best in space because of no air resistance but, during Scorpius' control over John, it was found that the Farscape One flies better than a prowler in a planet's atmosphere (Although the neural chip does point out that it is most likely because John has had more training.) A prowler can rotate its wings (where the engines are mounted) 90 degrees to allow vertical take off and hovering.
