Provisional Government of the Republic of China

The Provisional Government of the Republic of China was a Japanese puppet state based in Beijing, formed on December 14 1937 with Wang Ke-min as President. It was later absorbed by the Wang Jingwei Government in March 1940, but continued as a nearly independent entity under the name of the North China Political Council.

Its security was at first based on a 5,000 man police force. The Provisional Government Army began to be organized in May 1938 with the organization of a military academy in Tungchow. NCO's began 6 months of training in Feb. 1939 and the army was to form in September 1939. At first the Army had to fill most of the officer and NCO slots with former Nationalist officers until the newly trained officers could take charge.

The army was to consist of 13,200 men in 8 Infantry Regiments of 1,650 men, six of the regiments were organized in 3 Brigades of 2 Regiments and put under the command of a Chinese Major General and a Japanese advisor. There was also a 400 man strong bodyguard formed to protect government officials after all of Wang Ke-min's Japanese bodyguards were killed on duty.
