[edit] History
Founded as a vocal quartet in the fall semester of 1996 by Chris Saulnier '99, Aaron Wade '98, Alex Tobin '98, and John Sayward '00. After a warm reception to their first semester's work, a cover of The Beatles' When I'm Sixty-Four, the group added Brian Cannel '99 for the remainder of the year. In Fall 1997, Special Guest held their first auditions to create a full a cappella group.
Special Guest chooses vocal selections to demonstrate the members' versatility. Their repetoire has expanded to span such genres as contemporary popular music, oldies, hip hop, doo-wop, rock and roll, heavy metal, and jazz. Almost all of the group's material is arranged by an individual member, the group as a whole, or a Special Guest alumni. Additionally, the group enjoys enhancing their on-stage showmanship by interspersing comedic skits in many of their concerts. Often called to sing the National Anthem at the Providence Friars basketball and hockey games, Special Guest enjoys spreading school spirit with various performances during the winter holidays, New Student Days, and Parents Weekends, and their Valentine's Day song-o-grams are a popular, longstanding campus tradition.
Special Guest celebrated its tenth anniversary with a concert in January 2007. Alumni from past groups performed in six different lineups, including the present day group.
