Dying writer Clive Langham (Gielgud) spends one tormented night in his bed drinking and and thinking up a story based on his relatives that depicts, through flashbacks, how spiteful and treacherous his family is. As the story unfolds, it becomes unclear as to whether these are the way things really are or if his bitterness has shaded his perceptions.
