Proterospongia is a genus of choanoflagellate. It is colonial, with two types of differentiated cells.[verification needed] The cells on the surface have beating flagella to move the organism through the water and catch food and inner cells that reproduce, increasing the size of the organism.[verification needed] The ancestors of sponges were presumably forms like Proterospongia.
